Background:

I work in the IBM Mainframe team, as a systems programmer, based in Waterhouse Square. I have worked for Prudential since May 1999, though 7 of these years were spent working at Capgemini on the Prudential account as part of the outsourced team which was then brought back in-house. Prior to Prudential, I started my IT career as a trainee programmer working in various positions up to DBA over a 14 year period at Commercial Union (now Aviva) before leaving to join Prudential.

Why am I part of Unite:

I strongly believe that if you want to change things you need to be part of a recognised group who has influence with the decision makers. That group has to have a good understanding of what matters to the people like me and to have a good working relationship with the company I work for, but at the same time a group that is not afraid to challenge things if it thinks something is wrong. Unite gives me that voice in the work place and in PGDS and that is why I am a member.

Why did I become a Unite rep:

I believe that if you don’t like something you need to actively do something about it in a positive manner. With the outsource to Capgemini, I felt I’d had little input to the process and that I didn’t feel our interests had been well represented. At the start of our TUPE back to Prudential I joined the staff consultation team looking at the details of our TUPE. We worked closely with both company’s HR departments and senior managers trying to ensure our concerns and issues were looked at and resolved. During this time I learnt the importance of understanding our terms and conditions, and the issues around our pensions. On returning to Prudential I wanted to ensure that this constructive dialogue with HR and senior managers continued and that all staff at PGDS were represented, treated fairly and equally. It is for these reasons that I became a Unite rep.

What can I do for you

In order to be your Unite rep I need to hear from all of you. You need to tell me the direction to take and then I will act upon it. The Unite team meet regularly with Karen and her team in HR to discuss topics and strive to maintain the good relationship we currently have.
