About us

History

Unite is the recognised trade union in Prudential and we have had recognition for 49 years. Prudential Section forms a key part of the history of the Finance Sector within the Union.

In 1970 Baroness Muriel Turner, persuaded the Prudential Staff Associations to transfer into the ASTMS union. She was able to get the agreement of the Executive of the ASTMS at that time to change its rules to allow Finance Sector workers into the union to allow for the transfer of the Prudential members.

Following that change ASTMS targeted other Finance Companies for organisation and the finance sector began to grow. Then ASTMS merged with TASS to form MSF, which then merged with AEEU to form Amicus, which then merged with Unifi, to bring in bank union members, and finally Amicus merged with T&G to form Unite.

The Finance Sector remains the largest sector within Unite and it all started with Prudential and the work done by Baroness Turner in 1970.

What do we do

Prudential Section have recognition agreements in Reading, London and Craigforth.

This allows us to negotiate terms and conditions on behalf of Grades 1- 3 in these areas (excluding PFP and Intermediaries).

We negotiate the annual pay review for employees and all members get a vote on whether to accept of reject the Company’s offer each year.

We regularly meet with Senior Managers in all the areas where we have recognition to discuss changes and developments to the business.

We sit on Group Health & Safety and Environmental Committees to ensure all employees work in a safe and sustainable workplace
